Look closely at the above photo, taken earlier today, and you will see detained refugees struggling to make themselves heard to whoever will listen. Pope Francis is expected to visit the camp to speak with some of the 3000 refugees there and see the conditions there for himself. And so, hurriedly. walls are being scrubbed and debris hidden. The Pope has been described as radical in comparison to his predecessors. But if he really does wish to live up to that description (and not merely issue token gestures of support) then let him announce to the world that not one of the refugees in Greece and elsewhere fleeing war deserves to be detained – never mind returned to war zones – but should be liberated so that they – men, women and children – can be free…
